The champagne bottle : style like no other

The champagne bottle, with its slender profile and broad shoulders, is arguably one of the best-known wine bottles in the world.

You might be wondering why it's so famous - after all, Champagne isn't the only French wine region to have its own style of bottle. Bordeaux and Burgundy also have bottles named after them. Alsace wines are also easily recognizable with their sleek shape. Yet it's always champagne that catches your eye first! But why?

An imposing bottle

The main reason why champagne bottles are so eye-catching is their massive profile. Besides their aesthetic and marketing purposes, champagne bottles are designed to preserve and enhance the qualities of the sparkling wine they contain. They have to meet very strict production standards. After all, a bottle of champagne is a little pressure bomb. That's why every celebration is marked by a popping cork!

Champagne bottles are generally thicker than those used for still wines, giving them greater resistance to the pressure created by carbon dioxide bubbles. This extra thickness helps maintain a constant pressure inside the bottle, preserving the champagne's freshness and effervescence.

Another characteristic of the champagne bottle, but one that is often overlooked, is the hollow bottom. Also known as "punt", this hollow space in the bottom of the bottle adds stability, while allowing yeast deposits to collect during the riddling process. This small detail makes it easier to disgorge the bottle, an important step in the vinification of any good champagne.

Iconic bottles

It's hard not to talk about design when it comes to champagne bottles.

Designers have been using their creativity to create this product of French excellence for over a century now. Winemaking is in the hands of the winemakers, but creativity is required when it's time to dress up the bottle.

The champagne bottle sits somewhere between the traditional and the avant-garde, and has become a medium for boundless creativity, making its mark on our imagination since the creation of the great champagne houses at the end of the 19th century. Here are a few examples:

- Dom Pérignon: an iconic Champagne wine with a black label and gold plate. Their design is minimalist and sophisticated.

- Cristal: this bottle is produced by Louis Roederer and is famous for its distinctive design and transparent crystal bottle. Originally created for Russian Tsar Alexander II in the 19th century, the bottle has since gained international recognition.

- Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque: the Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque bottle is famous for its artistic, floral design. Each bottle is decorated with a hand-painted label depicting delicate flowers, such as anemones.

- Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame: the Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame bottle features a bright yellow label, which has become the brand's symbol.

The big houses have led the way in aesthetic innovation for a long time, but today, winemakers are taking their revenge by creating designs that honor their terroir and its specific characteristics. After all, we shouldn't forget the most important aspect of a champagne bottle: what's inside!

How about the size of champagne bottles ?

The 75cl "standard" bottle is the most popular by far, and is also the most regularly consumed. It's the ideal size for small, intimate celebrations or one-to-one tastings. It can serve around 6 champagne flutes.

Half-bottles hold 37.5cl, and are usually intended for more intimate occasions.

Larger formats, such as magnums (1.5 L) and jeroboams (3 L), are perfect for large parties and special events. These imposing bottles add a spectacular dimension to any celebration and provide an extended tasting experience, allowing champagne to fully develop its aromas and complexity.

Champagne bottles are more than just containers. They reflect the exceptional elegance, artistry and craftsmanship that surround the world of champagne. Aesthetic design, technical features and bottle size all contribute to the overall champagne experience, adding a touch of sophistication to every festive moment.
