Champagne has one thing in common with all other wines, whatever their color, whether sparkling or not: they're all judged by label drinkers! This somewhat mocking term is for people who swear by the big brands but couldn't tell one champagne from another if you put them to a blind test.

They're confusing prestige with quality. We're not saying that the big brands take advantage of their good reputation, but they're not the only ones to offer top-of-the-range champagnes. The difference lies in the packaging and the price.

The low-risk choice of a big brand

Obviously, if you want to offer your guests - and yourself - a top-of-the-range champagne, you might play it safe by choosing a famous Champagne house brand. The downside is that you rarely get the chance to enjoy it because of the price tag.

Champagne houses are distributed on a large scale, which incurs costs due to promotion and intermediaries for transport, storage and sales. All these costs have an impact on their final selling price.

Champagne from small producers

If you really love champagne, but don't want to limit yourself to sipping it only once a year, you should consider the delicious champagnes from small producers. Don't hesitate to go off the beaten track to discover the treasures of the Champagne region. Your budget will stretch farther, and you'll be able to enjoy them and share them with others.

A winemaker's champagne is made by a craftsman who oversees the entire production process, from vine cultivation to vinification. The production is of course smaller than bigger Champagne houses, which buy grapes from several winemakers to produce large quantities.

The disadvantage is that its distribution is also more confidential and, in the absence of advertising, it is difficult to make a choice.

How to choose the best champagne from small producers?

The General Union of Champagne Winemakers lists five thousand winemakers and winemaker unions. Unless you want to taste them all, you're going to need some help to make a decision!

That's why we created our Champagne Terroir platform: we're constantly working to select champagnes from small producers, to help them promote themselves and their products. Of course, each winemaker respects the strict specifications of the Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée Champagne (AOC), but how do you know the nuances of each champagne and how do you make your choice to find the one that best suits your taste?

You can find champagnes from small producers in a highly confidential circuit of wine merchants, but you'll find the widest choice on the Internet. Unfortunately, it's hard to find what you're looking for, given the wide range on offer and the lack of quality certainty.
