Champagne Sadi Malot

This family of independent winemakers, nestled in the heart of the Épernay - Châlons-en-Champagne - Reims triangle, invites you to rediscover the traditional know-how of its terroir.

The Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes are honoured in the 10 hectares of Premier and Grand Cru vineyards owned by the family.

For five generations, Champagne Sadi Malot has combined traditional know-how and modernity to sublimate all the potential of the champagnes of the Montagne de Reims.

A champagne at the crossroads of French history

The adventure of this family of winegrowers began with Sadi Malot at the beginning of the 20th century. This son of a Champagne winegrower with such a strange first name was so named because he was born on the day of the assassination of the President of the French Republic Sadi Carnot (1887-1894). Unfortunately, Sadi Malot was mobilised in the First World War and died at the front. His brother, Socrate Malot, decided to pay tribute to him by naming his eldest son after him.

Since then, each generation has been able to enhance the heritage of its elders to bring out the full potential of an exceptional terroir. Today, the Malot family cultivates 8.2 hectares of Chardonnay and 1.8 hectares of Pinot Noir.

An atypical grape variety in the Montagne de Reims

If the Montagne de Reims is well known to champagne lovers, it is above all for its Pinot Noirs. The Sadi Malot House, although located in the northern part of this terroir, could therefore be considered as a UFO with 80% of its vineyard planted with Chardonnay. But if you look twice, you will quickly understand the reason for this originality.

Indeed, all these vines are planted on the terroir of a single village of die-hards of the Montagne de Reims: Villiers-Marmery. The soils of this village are crossed by a vein of limestone mother rock unique in the North of Champagne and which is not without reminding the composition of the soils of the Côte des Blancs. This is why Villiers-Marmery and its Chardonnay are an exception in the middle of the sea of Pinot Noirs surrounding it. The wines of this vineyard, and especially the Sadi Malot Champagne, are distinguished by their great delicacy and aromatic freshness.

It is in this unique environment that the Malot family has been making Sadi Malot Champagnes for 5 generations.

Vineyard and cellar work at the heart of the Champagne Sadi Malot approach

But the land is of little value if we don't know how to take care of it, and Champagne Sadi Malot has understood this perfectly. For the past fifteen years, the family business has embarked on the adventure of integrated farming. This approach involves a reduction in inputs and mechanical working of the soil. This long process of gradual conversion was finally rewarded in 2014 by obtaining HVE (High Environmental Value) certification.

As the work in the vineyard is only the first step in the work of a winegrower, the approach of Champagne Sadi Malot does not stop there. The family is also distinguished by another major line of work, that of the wood in its vintages. This is demonstrated by the acquisition and customised design in 2010 of a cask made of wood from the nearby Argonne forest.

Champagne Sadi Malot is the fruit of this long history and of this perpetual concern for improvement which characterises this family of winegrowers, generation after generation. Through constant work, Champagne Sadi Malot offers you the opportunity to rediscover all the potential of the wines of the Montagne de Reims from a new angle!
