VERZENAY - Montagne de Reims

Champagne Olivier Rousseaux

Behind the name Olivier Rousseaux, it is today Juliette who imprints the style of the estate, with a precise and thoughtful approach to Verzenay.

Her journey between Champagne, Rioja and Canada is felt in the wines: a more modern, more assertive interpretation in Grand Cru from the north of the Montagne de Reims, where tension and freshness take precedence over the demonstration of power.

The estate stands out for a coherent and readable range, controlled dosages and a real gastronomic orientation. Straight, structured champagnes, designed for the table, which move away from more consensual profiles.

The terroir of Champagne Olivier Rousseaux

Located in Verzenay, a Grand Cru village in the heart of the Montagne de Reims, the estate is rooted in one of the most emblematic terroirs of Champagne. Set on the cooler north-facing slope, this vineyard benefits from a specific exposure that helps preserve tension and freshness, while maintaining excellent ripeness in the grapes.

The soils, predominantly limestone and chalk, give rise to wines that are structured, precise and elegant. Pinot Noir reigns supreme here, expressing both power and precision, with a finesse characteristic of this area. Chardonnay, more discreet, completes the blends by bringing balance and nuance. The diversity of the parcels, spread across the entire terroir of Verzenay, along with the presence of old vines, contributes to the complexity and depth of the cuvées.

A family legacy driven by independence

The story of the estate begins after the Second World War, when Robert Lécompère, a cooper by trade, invested in vineyards and produced his first bottles through the village cooperative. His daughter Liliane and her husband Alain Rousseaux then continued to develop the vineyard, following a gradual and family-led approach.

In 1985, Olivier Rousseaux took over the estate at just 19 years old. He marked a decisive turning point in 1991 by building his own winery, asserting his independence and his desire to control the entire production process, from vineyard to bottle. Today, the estate produces around 15,000 bottles per year, with an artisanal approach that remains true to its terroir.

Since 2024, his daughter Juliette has joined the estate, bringing a more open, internationally oriented vision while remaining in line with the family tradition. The estate is committed to environmentally responsible viticulture, certified HVE and VDC, reflecting a sustainable and thoughtful approach.

The Olivier Rousseaux style

The estate’s style is built on a search for balance between power and precision, closely linked to the identity of Verzenay. Pinot Noir structures the cuvées with its depth and precision, while Chardonnay brings tension and finesse.

Vinification is carried out mainly in stainless steel tanks to preserve the purity of the fruit, with certain cuvées incorporating partial oak aging to add complexity and texture. The use of reserve wines, particularly through solera-type systems, allows for blends that are consistent and reliable over time. Extended aging on the lees refines the texture and reveals the full complexity of the wines.

Olivier Rousseaux Champagnes stand out for their precision, clarity and balance. Cuvées that are both structured and accessible, equally suited to aperitif or the table, always with the same signature: expressing the terroir of Verzenay with accuracy and sincerity.
