History and heritage

Founded in 1883, Champagne Marc Billiard & Fils is one of those addresses you discover almost by chance, down a quiet lane in Avenay-Val-d’Or. For seven generations, the family has passed on its know-how from father to son, in the purest Champagne tradition.
Today, Jonathan Billiard manages this 2-hectare micro-estate divided into 18 small plots. Faithful to his family’s legacy, he maintains a simple yet demanding approach: everything by hand, nothing superfluous, letting the wine speak for its place and its year.

Terroir and vineyard

Just a few kilometres from Aÿ and Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, Avenay-Val-d’Or sits at the crossroads of Champagne’s two great identities: the Montagne de Reims, land of Pinot Noir, and the Côte des Blancs, home of Chardonnay.
Here, chalk lies beneath layers of clay and sand, forming a complex, well-drained soil that gives the wines both roundness and freshness, with a refined mineral tension.

Avenay-Val-d’Or produces wines of natural balance —

  • more delicate than those from the Montagne de Reims, often defined by their power;

  • but fuller and more expressive than those from the Côte des Blancs, known for their chalky precision.

The Billiard vineyard, composed of 50% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay and 20% Meunier, lies entirely within Avenay. The vines, aged between 1 and 60 years, capture the diversity and depth of this Premier Cru terroir.

Philosophy and craftsmanship

At Marc Billiard & Fils, everything is done on a human scale. No grand oak vats or gleaming cellars — just meticulous work, precision, and balance.
All wines are vinified on site, in stainless steel, without any wood influence, to preserve purity of fruit and clarity of expression.

Jonathan pursues a fine, pure and faithful style, where each cuvée reflects both the vintage and the spirit of the soil.
While he continues the family tradition with the classic range, his Exclusive Collection allows him to express each harvest freely — creating unique, unrepeated champagnes that capture the truth of the year.
